Japan: Nara

Nara:
Within an hour of Osaka is Nara- famous for its shrines & deer. The latter are rather a sad sight: technically wild but fed daily by tourists buying 'deer crackers' in exchange for photos. The deer's don't know about this deal however so get narky by the 'dangling food towards the camera lens' tease they're subjected to.  We very much enjoyed watching people getting chased, butted & bitten after turning their backs on their doe-eyed attackers.

The shrines are mostly shriney, and we've seen a lot by this stage. The big draw though is Todai-ji with its 50ft Buddha inside.

Sheer scale makes its impressive but our trip was made all the better by the game of ' who can squeeze through a hole in one of the ancient wooden pillars' going on behind Buddha.  Gutted that I didn't take a photo of the 80 yr old woman's look of triumph as she slid through (aided only by several people shoving her legs on one side & pulling her arms on the other) to claim victory. Temple Athlete.

Back to Osaka then to look at the castle. A white one this time.
